Here’s a typical LBI dog studio portrait setup.

I meter the dog’s face with the desired aperture and allow the meter to tell me what shutter speed to use. This type of lighting can be handy for a dramatic look because a higher shutter speed will darken the background and leave the subject’s face illuminated beautifully.

These images were captured at twilight with a shutter speed of 1/1000 to freeze the dog’s expression in the portrait.
